Emla 5% cream is a topical anesthetic commonly used to numb the skin or mucous membranes. It contains two active ingredients: lidocaine (2.5%) and prilocaine (2.5%), both of which are local anesthetics. These agents work by temporarily blocking the transmission of nerve signals in the application area, reducing pain or discomfort.
Uses:
- Numbing the skin before medical procedures such as:
- Blood draws or intravenous (IV) insertion.
- Minor dermatological treatments (e.g., mole removal, laser treatments).
- Reducing pain during superficial skin procedures like tattooing or piercing.
- Relieving discomfort from superficial wounds or skin irritations.
Application Instructions:
- Apply a thick layer of cream to the area requiring numbing.
- Cover the area with an occlusive dressing (e.g., plastic wrap) to enhance absorption.
- Allow the cream to remain on the skin for 30-60 minutes for effective numbing.
- Remove the dressing and wipe off any excess cream before starting the procedure.
Precautions:
- Avoid applying to broken or inflamed skin unless directed by a healthcare provider.
- Do not use near the eyes or inside the mouth.
- Use with caution in individuals with sensitivity to local anesthetics or a history of methemoglobinemia.
- Not recommended for infants younger than 12 months without medical advice.
Side Effects:
- Temporary redness, swelling, or irritation at the application site.
- Rarely, systemic effects like dizziness or drowsiness may occur if absorbed in large amounts.
Always follow the instructions provided by a healthcare professional or the product label when using Emla cream.
* The package box will be mostly in Greek language and so the instruction leaflet as well.
